What I Liked

Intense

This book is intense, Alex deals with the loss of hope and the possibility of never getting out of the hell hole that is Furnace. At a few points he does hit rock bottom and you completely feel sorry for this kid that deserves to be in prison, but not in Furnace. Alex is on an emotional roller coaster ride of the loss of hope and the light of hope. He has worked his way into being the provider of hope for other kids, what a heavy burden.

The Furnace

Maybe the place isn't at sealed up as the inmates are lead to believe. A few more potential escape routes are discovered by Alex, he is one handy kids to have around when you need to escape from an inescapable place.

A New Nasty

The Blacksuites, Wheezers, the Warden, the dogs and now these mutant rat things that can chew through anything. These disgusting things must be avoided at all costs, they are gross and scary and with the revelation of what they use to be is even worse.
Ending
Oh my goodness, I can't believe it ended like that, so close yet so far away. I can't wait to start reading the next book.

Distracted

Dirty
I got distracted by being grossed out by how filthy everything in solitary is. Licking the walls to get some water, having a hole to squat over with nothing to wipe with, searching for bits of slop on the floor near the squat hole, no showers or washing hands . . . the list can go on for ages. I love my soap even more after reading this book.

Recommendation
This is book 2 in the series, got to read this series.

What I Loved

Another Cutter Brother

I do love it when books follow a set of siblings and each book features the next sibling. These Cutter men are so delicious, ripped, tanned, dark hair and have these amazing blue eyes.

Nick aka Spock: Yes he is nicknamed Spock because he lack of emotions and cool exterior. I personally like him a little more than Zane (the brother from bk 1 Undertow), Zane is a fun guy but I really love the broody type that likes to keep their emotions very controlled. Nick also has some other really amazing talents and he does some undercover work as well too due to his ability to place accents and speak like 6 languages. What a man!!

Bria aka Princess Gabriella: Where Nick is cool Bria is fiery. She is a very fun character a little vixen that is use to getting her way, but she also knows how to kick some ass when she needs too. Not a little whiny princess at all, she can take a few punches and deal with it all.

Romance

Oh Cherry, boy can she write some amazing steamy scenes. These two are amazing for each other and the provide a lot of entertainment with just their interactions with each other.

Action

Along with the bedroom action there is plenty of near death action, bullets flying, rocking falling and blood diamonds.

What I Didn't Like

. . . I still can't think of anything.

Recommendation

Second book in the series of romantic suspense. Must read

What I Loved

Characters

Teal: She is a pretty awesome character, she may have some social interaction issues but I love how witty and quick she is. Teal is a female mechanic and since there are so few of those in the romance world I just loved that about her. Teal's willingness to confide and open up about her hard life is memorable. Her name is odd and unique, but it completely fits her.

Zane: At first I was not completely in love with him, I personally don't care much for the Casanovas types and his nickname is "Casanova of the Caribbean". As more of his personality was revealed I really did come to love him.

Romance

I LOVE their type of courtship. I love it when the woman does not instantly fall for his charms and will keep pushing back and he lays the sex appeal on thick. The tug of war relationships are always so entertaining and especially with a man who is use to getting every girl he wants and the one girl he can't have is the one he wants the most. LOVE IT! Yes the romance is steamy.

At Sea Action

I'm not much of a sea person, I'm not a strong swimmer and I don't think I am capable of scuba diving at all, but with all the beauty and awesome treasure they were finding I really wish I was able to do both of those things. The story has love, lust, treasure seeking, pirates, guns blazing and all the action you would expect to come from Cherry's books.

My Only Qualm

I thought bullets didn't go very far when shooting into the water, nor do they shoot well underwater? I'm not a gun expert and I don't really care how accurate this really is since the book is a creation of fiction. It did however make for some exciting underwater action scenes.

Recommendation

Like romantic suspense, got to read this series.

My 26th Birthday

My 1st Blogoversary

I decided to start blogging in February, I wanted to share my love for books with other book lovers. I had no idea what I was even doing when I started. I really didn't look into blog names, I kinda just picked something that was available and went with it. I didn't expect I would get into blogging like I have. I have enjoyed the last year of having this thing, it has been both an interesting and a fun experience.

Not only it is my blog's birthday month but it is mine as well. I will be turning 26 and I have to say I am going to miss being 25. Why? Because age 25 was my golden year and it has been a great year for me, yes I have had some downs but overall its been awesome.

Journal

I have been wanting to take a picture using this cool pen and ink for awhile now. Originally I was thinking this picture was going to be about the words, but when I was practicing in cursive I realized my cursive sucks since I haven't written in it for years. I decided to switch the focus to the pen. The journal is actually something that my husband and I write in (occasionally), the pages are love notes to each other. I'm trying to get my husband to write in it more, but he hasn't written in it for a few years. He also decided to be unconventional and start 20 pages in and write towards the front. For this picture I just picked the very center page and wrote a valentines love note.

I still am stunned by this ending. I can't even bring myself to rate it, because I hated the ending, but I realized it is how it had to end. No HEAs for this book.

I really liked both boys, but she only ends up with one and my heart broke for the boys she didn't choose.

I love Adrien and I'm so sad that he got the short end of the stick. He and Rose aren't a good match but I still want him to be with someone. Need to still read Bloodlines.

3 Weeks of Books

IMM #44

Well the last 2 weekends I never had the chance to create my IMM post. The 1st week I missed I had continuing education classes on Saturday and Sunday lasting from 9-6 and I was too exhausted to do anything. The following weekend I took my friends engagement photos and I was really busy doing all the post processing which took me over 10 hrs to complete.

I can finally share all my books I have gotten over the last 3 weeks and I got a lot of great books!!

What I Liked

Thriller
Not my typical read, but I completely enjoyed Lockdown from beginning to end and I'm looking forward to reading book 2 Solitary. I was kept on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next, how Alex is going to escape Furnace and what hellish creature would make an appearance next. The prison reminds me of Chronicles of Riddick's prison on Crematoria, the hellish dogs included.
Character
Alex: Not the typical main character who is the hero waiting to save the day, but rather the bad kid who steals from people. It is interesting to follow a character who deserves to be put into prison, but not framed for a murder and put into the hellhole he is going to. We follow Alex not only through the horrors he has to live through but understanding his mistakes in life and wishing he could change. I'm looking forward to seeing how Alex develops and gets past all these horrors and obstacles that he is going to be facing.

What I Didn't Like

I want to know more, more about The Furnace, the warren, the guards and the characters.

Recommendation

You have to have a bit of a strong stomach for this one, some of it is slightly gruesome. Not a book for romance only readers. Definitely worth the read if you like thrillers.

Inspired By

Romeo & Juliet

For a Kiss

I went and took a friends engagement photos for them this last weekend. I explained to them for this picture that I was envisioning a Romeo and Juliet scene when Romeo climbed up the balcony to kiss Juliet. I really liked how this turned out, I especially like the little tower behind, it just adds character to the picture.

This engagement shoot was a lot of fun and it was a wonderful learning experience too. I took 238 photos and I'm going through all of them right now and doing all the post processing stuff, which is the most time consuming part.

I'm planning to start taking more inspired by book pictures as the weather gets better. There are a lot of books that take place in Washington and I would love to share the beauty of those places for non Washington residents. If you can think of a book that takes place in Washington and would love to see what that scene actually looks like let me know and I will try to make it happen.

This is a hard one because depending on what they might or might not like I would suggest different genres bases on the person. I'm not going to give every non-reader the same list of books, I have to be selective or I will fail.

These are a few books that I have actually suggested to non-readers.

Twilight Saga

My friend: she read it and is completely obsessed with it and now nothing compares to Twilight. I have tried a few other books but it I have yet to succeed.

Harry Potter

For my husband: he finally read bk 1 in the series and it took him 9 months to read. Still working on getting him started on bk 2.

Fairytales

My sister: after with watching Once Upon a Time she has been curious about the original fairytales versions so I have told her to read The Brother's Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson. I'm also giving her some YA (short in length) retold fairytales to read.

A very short list, I know A LOT of readers and I have suggested many books.

What I Loved

Cinderella

I am a sucker for any retelling of Cinderella, it has always been one of my favorites. This version puts a whole new twist on the story, put the story in the future add some freakish disease killing off people and then add cyborgs into the mix and top it off with Cinder(ella) being part cyborg and not fully human. Keep the wicked stepmother, one wicked stepsister, one nice step sister, slavery in her own home and the handsome prince all the same. There you have it a perfect recipe for a new original Cinderella story.

Characters

Cinder: She is such a wonderful character. Cinder isn't a hopelessly romantic pushover, but a realist who can't help but dream a little. One after another she faces hardships and struggles and she never gives up hope that one day she will get out of her crappy situation.

Prince Kai: I love this prince that is for sure. I understand why he has such a girl fan base, I would be part of that too. I also love that he knows Cinder as a mechanic, it is so cute that he gets to see her down and dirty with grease on her face.

Didn't Like

The ending was a cliffhanger, it sucks that I have to wait for the next book to come out. I really want to have the next book in my hands right now.

Recommendation

Must read, go out and buy it now or move it to the top of your reading pile.

The Emerald City

I have been wanting to take a picture of one of my Oz books. At first I had no idea what I was going to do, but as I was looking through the book I remembered the reason why the Emerald City is emerald is because the citizens wear tinted glasses and the city is actually white. When I was taking the picture I figured I would tint the picture green. As I was playing around with the photo I decided to try the vignette option (black border) and I liked the look of it and it made it almost look like a cut emerald.

It is a cold day at the end of the world when a young woman, a princess in hiding, looks out across a Northern sea and sees something she could not have seen. It looks...it can't be. It looks like a mermaid's tail. And, as she looks more closely, she sees that the mermaid is dragging a drowning sailor in her arms. Because, only hours before, another princess, the daughter of the sea queen, has decided to risk everything and take a look at the world above the sea: the world of mortals. And there she finds a storm, a shipwreck, a sailor, and sets in train events which will change both women's worlds forever.

What I Loved

An Andersen Based Mermaid Story

This follows the Hans Christian Andersen version not the Disney Little Mermaid. The Anderson version is much more dark and tragic with no HEA (happily ever after) for the mermaid. Carolyn's version gives us the point of view of both the mermaid Lenia and the Prince's eventual fiance Margrethe. Carolyn paints this beautiful underwater world filled with magic and mermaids, I don't think I would be able to leave it.

Characters

The Mermaid Lenia: The fascination with the world above, saving a prince, falling in love with him and trading her powerful fin for weak human legs and constant pain. Lenia is both passionate and beautiful and she will risk everything for true love.

The Princess Margrethe: In Andersen's version she is only introduced at the very end for the wedding for she the death of the mermaid. Instead in Carolyn's version we get to know this princess, who she is, her passions and her point of view. We get to know her as a kind-hearted future ruler who does believe in magic and mermaids after her encounter with Lenia.

Ending

This story was wonderful and I loved it completely. I was happy with the ending even though it didn't end an a perfect HEA, it had a bittersweet ending of contentment.

Confusion

I felt like I was betraying Lenia because I liked Margrethe and since Andersen's mermaid's life ended so tragically I wanted it to end differently somehow. I wanted both of them to be happy, but I had no idea how that was going to happen when both of them love the same man and the dictation of the kingdom.

Recommendation

If you like the original Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, but are sad with how it ended you need to try this story out. This isn't a romance read so there is very little romantic stuff.

But before he goes, Austin wants to mend the broken fences in his life. So with the help of his best friend, Kaylee, Austin visits every person in his life who touched him in a special way. He journeys to places he’s loved and those he’s never seen. And what starts as a way to say goodbye turns into a personal journey that brings love, acceptance, and meaning to Austin’s life.

What I Loved

Emotion

The book contained so much emotion, for the main character Austin who is going to die soon and all the friends and family surrounding him. At the end I cried a lot, usually it will just be runny nose, but this was book had tears streaming down my cheek. Typically I say away from these types of books, but it was so worth the read and tears. A bittersweet read.

Timeline

The timeline for this book was really short. The whole book except for the last 20 pages took place over Saturday and Sunday. Within those two days we really did get to understand Austin and his mission to help people realize why they needed to live their life while they have it.

The Places

Austin wants to go do some of the typical Seattle stuff like have lunch at the Space Needle and walk through the EMP (Experience Music Project) a museum-esk thing dedicated to music. He also took a hike on Mt Rainer up to Comet Falls, I want to go on that hike this summer. All of the rest of the description on Tacoma makes me want to go there as well.

What I Didn't Like

It was short book and I would have read more, but at the same time the amount of information you got was just right for the story and the feel of the book.

Recommendation

Worth the read just make sure you have a box of tissues with you by the end of the book.

The event started with a meet and great, buying books and eating some food and awesome cookies. There was some issues with the snow and getting the books that were to be sold to the library. There ended up being a limited number of books (2 boxes, her stock) and each person got a number (some a few numbers) to count off how many books they were to buy.

After the initially meet and great the schedule got changed around and Megan started signing books so that people could leave early due to the bad weather.

After almost everyone got their books signed and many people were there the book presentation started. The librarian introduced Megan and told a little bit about her. Megan took the stage (figuratively) and had a speech prepared to thank people for coming, family, friends and the rest of the support group for her writing.

After Megan's speech we got to have the book trailer shown to us.

Next we got to listen to reading of a chapter in the book. This was the first time I have ever seen two people reading in dialogue at a book event. Originally a younger boy was going to voicing Austin, but due to the snow a last minute replacement had to be found. Austin's replacement ended up being a librarian who is an actor and taught at a school.

To wrap up we were able to do some Q&A for Megan before the actually signing line started.

What was your influence to start writing?

Megan started writing after her mother in law was diagnosed with terminal cancer and they said she had a few months to live but only lived for a few weeks. Because Megan was grieving she wrote to cope with her loss. Her first story was a super hero story, but she isn't sure if that will ever be published. Megan ended up writing Never Eighteen during NaNoWriMO (National November Writers Month). Originally the title was called Mending Fences and the book went through 15 revisions before it ended in its final state. Megan received a call when she was in Disneyland that she was getting a book deal to be published.

How much changed from the first to the final draft?

A lot changed actually. Originally the characters were adult aged, but since the book was going to be for teens and teen don't like to typically read about adult characters they went to being teenagers. Another chunk was taken out because the publisher said Austen didn't need to learn all the other characters secrets.

Who would you cast for your characters?

Austen: Aaron Johnson (from Kick Ass)

Kaylee: Amanda Seyfried

Even though your book is in your local home town did you have to do any research?

Yes, since Megan had never been to the Space Needle (many locals haven't) she went with her husband and kids and they went to the top and had lunch. They also went to the EMP (Experience Music Project) as well. With the falls she ended up redoing the description because she didn't remember it all.

What is your writing style?

Megan just learned recently that she can call herself a "panser", she thrives on organized chaos as long as she has pen, paper and sticky notes she has everything in her head and just goes where the story takes her. Megan likes to write a lot of description, dialog and internal thoughts, she finds the other stuff boring.

Do you write with messages in mind?

To live life. You never know when it will all be gone. Reach out to others that are hurting.

Next work?

Working on getting her next book published called Sliced, a story of love, loathing and cutting.

The event ended with the last people getting there books signed and people mingling and talking. There was 3 raffles, 2 copies of the book and a goodie basket filled with lots of cool things. Sadly I didn't win. The event was a lot of fun and I'm glad the streets were clear enough to allow for the event to still proceed.

I went to the event having not read the book yet, but after the event I was even more interested since they were handing out little tissues. I read Never Eighteen the day after and yes I used those tissues, they are completely necessary when reading this book.

What I Loved

The Series

This is book 2 in the Dark Dynasties series, Kendra writes her series with each book having a different couple but an arching storyline connecting them all together. I love how she writes her series, even though I come to love the previous couple I always look forward to getting to know other characters that have been introduced and slightly talked about. Plus we still get to see how the previous characters are doing because they are still interacting with the new characters.

Characters

Lyra: She is my favorite female character type, she is strong, feisty and an independent young werewolf. Lyra is will to fight to become alpha when females aren't respected nor strong enough to be the alpha werewolf.

Jaden: What a hunk of a cat shifting broody tortured vampire that has always had a soft side. He made a little appearance in book one, but this book is all his story and I completely love him.

Romance

Forbidden love. Vampires and werewolves do NOT have relations of any sort together. For werewolf society it is prohibited and that werewolf would be caste out of the pack. For the vampire it is dirty and slumming. But the physical undeniable attraction these to have for each other can't be denied forever.

Paranormal

I love the history that Kendra has created for her vampires and werewolves. The vampires abilities are so different than anything I have ever read before and I completely love it.

Didn't Like

NOTHING I just want more

Recommendation

Must read for paranormal romance readers, this world is awesome and the characters are amazing.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

I actually took this picture to possibly use as part of my header, along with the Bookography picture above, but I figured out I'm not that good with working with Elements yet.

What better book to use with this heart necklace than with Pride and Prejudice an all time classic romance story. I did some post processing with the color, but not that much because well there isn't that much color for this photo. It is simplistic but I love it.

The event started off with Andrea opening up to the exact page she wanted to starting reading from, it was meant to be. She reads from pg 66-70 in Bloodrose the pages are about Sabine and Ethan's rendezvous in the garden with Calla and Shay spying on them.

Next Andrea moved on to the Q&A and her favorite part hearing from "you guys".

The Q&A is my summary of the question and Andrea's answers.

What can you tell us about the Rift?

Rift is going to be a 2 book prequel series based in medieval Scotland and the history of the Keepers, Searchers and Guardians are explored. The book is written and will be out in August of 2012. She is currently working on book 2 Rise due in 2013.

Any other works planned after the Rift series?

Coauthoring a book with David Levithan in Spring 2013.

Also a steampunk series based in a new world with all new characters.

Why such unique names?

Names are very important to her and she can't write until the character has the name. When Andrea was little her parents showed her a baby book "Name Your Baby" in which her parents chose her name from. She became fascinated with names and took the book, she enjoyed learning the origins, different spelling and the means of all the different names. When she was younger she really liked the name Magenta, it was circled on and starred.

Magenta: Female; Origin-Italy; Meaning: a colour name, after a town in Italy

Nightshade pack names are all of English origins

Ban pack names are all of French origins

Did anyone try to tell you to change the ending?

No, the editor was stunned but loved it.

What is your publishing story?

Her story was an odd one, as she put it. After finishing grad school and working for a year she wanted to take some time for herself. She has always loved horses so she decided to lease a horse. One day the horse got spooked by another horse causing it to rear up and come down on her ankle breaking it. Being couch ridden she realized she wanted to write a novel. when she was writing she realized she wanted to make this a career because she was in love with it and so passionate about it. Andrea was frightened by the prospect as well because she had no idea how to get a book published. To overcome this she does what she does best, research! Andrea found out there are these great things called an agent that do the work for you.
Andrea wrote two practice novels that will never see the light of day and only her mom, dad and brother will only read them. Both books are YA, one is a high fantasy the other is paranormal that she wrote specially for her mom.

Andrea went to the publisher with a series, which is something you don't do as a debut author because publishers don't want to support something that might not sell. Fortunately for her the publisher asked if there was going to be more because he saw the multi book potential. Lucky for her Andrea has been allowed to write the "evil" cliffhangers. She sees Nightshade as one whole story chopped into three books.

What inspired Nightshade?
Andrea was walking her dog when this character Calla a strong female that was a werewolf popped into her head. That was all she knew about Calla. She went to the library to do some research and she found at poem by Margaret Atwood untitled (she is going to send me the book that it is found in when she is done with her tour) that inspired the story. When she was writing this book she knew this would be THE book to get published. In March she got an agent and in August she sold Nightshade to the publisher.

She also will find inspiration in other things and put them into stories. For example in the car ride to the bookstore the woman driving her to the event was telling Andrea how when she was younger her sister wanted a horse, so she bought one without telling her parents and kept in in the backyard. Andrea loves this story and wants to some how work it into a story one day.

Was there any major story changes?

Yes, Nightshade's timeline changed drastically. Originally the mating ceremony was not suppose to happen till the Spring Equinox and the readers would never read about the ceremony causing the mating to being less of a pressing issue for the characters. The editor (or publisher, I can't remember) wanted to know what would happen in the ceremony and Andrea decided she wanted to know too. She changed it and bumped the ceremony up to Samhain on Halloween.

You had mentioned that the Bloodrose cover is a specific scene, what it is?
Bloodrose is the scene outside the cave in Tordis you can tell because it is cold there and Calla has the fury jacket. The wolf she is guessing would be Mason (I'm guessing because of wolf coloring).

Why was the Nightshade cover changed?

It was changed for visual marketing purposes. There was confusion about what the story was about since it was so abstract. The new covers are more literal. Nightshade shows her transformation and the cover art was inspired by the poem. Wolfsbane is more sexual but Calla is embracing her sexuality and coming of age and she does were leather pants in the book so it is correct. Since she is coming out of a crouch it looks as if she is going to spring and shift at any moment.

How do you balance two careers?

Thankfully her for Andrea the University she works at has been very supportive and accommodating with her writing career and she current works part time only teaching one class. "Teaching makes me a better writer and writing makes me a better teacher". Since writing can be a very lonely solo job she likes being able to have that interaction especially since writing is all about people, so she needs to stay in touch with society.

Do you have students asking you questions?
Since the book is more recently published and college students can have a focused one track mind there isn't a lot that do. Most are really shy about it and will come in after hours to ask if they can get their book signed. With the new freshman coming in those are the ones that know more. Andrea has even gotten fans inquiring about the school through her.

Random Information

Andrea has a 2 book a year contracts, she likes the fast paced writing schedule. If it was only 1 a year she would get bored.

After the Q&A everyone lined up for the signing. I just decided to wait till the end since I had 8 books to get signed, 4 were mine and 4 are Mindy's at Magical Urban Fantasy Reads. During that time I was able to meet another local Washington blogger Anna or Grace from Peace, Love, Teen Fiction (left). Which I actually have seen her at A LOT of YA events, I just never knew she was a blogger. I also meet the two girls Ruby and Jenny from Our Time In Juvie (right).

The event was a lot of fun and I so glad I got to go. I even brought a friend with me and I got her to read the 1st book and she is currently reading book 2.

Cinderella and I

Cinderella has always been my #1 favorite Disney movie, Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid are very close behind. Why do I love Cinderella? Well besides the singing mice, it is the essence of hope. Hope that we can overcome our hardest trials in life.

Blood Rose

I went through a few different ideas for this picture while I was trying to find the supplies I need to create this photo.

The Rose

I was going to get a fake fabric rose, but I didn't want to spend $3 for a semi decent looking rose. My next idea was to make a silk ribbon rose, that didn't work at all. I tryed teaching myself through YouTube videos, but I couldn't figure it out. I remembered I had these paper craft roses and I decided to try it.

The Paint

I was thinking originally I wanted to have more "blood", like a pool of blood with more splatters on the rose, but when I was setting it up and trying to figure out how to incorporate the book I noticed the single drop of blood. So I decided to try simple

The Mirror

Originally I always had the mirror idea, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to put a pool of blood on my little decorative mirror. I then got the idea while at the store to get a frame, have the glass sitting on the book with the bloody rose on top. I did buy the frame, but as I was setting it up I decided to make this easy and try the mirror.

Post Editing

I wanted to have the red really pop in this photo, so I saturated the oranges, yellows and greens. Added a little Fill Light and there you have it the final photo.

What I Liked

The End

WOW!! What an awesome bittersweet ending. I cried, I was shocked, I was awed and I was happy.

Fast

One event after another kept on happening. They had to get the rest of the 3 parts of the swords together before the epic battle that would end the good guys or the bad guys. The whole book was exciting, gripping and completely enthralling. Never a dull or slow moment that is for sure.

Team Boy

I will forever be Team Shay till the end.

Didn't Like

I cried for a reason and it is sad. It is also the end of Calla's part in the story. But there is going to be a prequel, SWEET!!

Jacqueline Carey

I wish she would write another trilogy in the Terre D'Ange world. She has said she is done with those and she moving on to other genres. I will miss new stories based in that amazing world she created. Jacqueline is still writing other books so that is what matters the most.

What I Liked

Drama

This book has a lot of drama, a lot of things are happening and the pace never lets up. Even when they are talking about history I felt completely entranced. Something is always going on and I was left wondering what Andrea would throw at us next.

Sorrow

A lot of sad things happened during the book and a lot of friends were lost. Some of the losses were by death the others were by betrayal. I'm still surprised with how many people were killed during this book. But the action that was in the book was intense and awesome.

Team Boy

I'm still on Team Shay although throughout the book I was really missing Ren.

Some Annoyance

Calla: I didn't love her as much in this book. She breaks a little under all the immense pressure, but that just shows how human she can be. I respect her decision to not choose until she can save her pack, but at the same time it is so frustrating because I am Team Shay and I love his character. I can't wait for her to make her final decision and stick to it with her whole heart.

Recommendation

Definitely read this series.

What I Loved

Couldn't Put It Down

Just like Unearthly I had to finish Hallowed the day I started reading. Unlike Unearthly I didn't need to stay up till 3:30am to finish the book, I got Hallowed finished by 11:30pm. I got completely sucked into this world of angels, drama and choosing between two boys. When you are reading this series just forget about sleep, food and water and just finish the damn good book.

Team Boy: Tucker vs Christian

I have loved Tucker since he first started to show his good boy side to Clara in Unearthly, but I have always believed that Clara and Christian are suppose to be together. By the end of this book I have finally decided which side I will choose. Team Christian, I still adore Tucker and I hope he finds happiness just not with Clara.

Characters

Christian: Wow, does he sure shine in this book. We get to learn so many things about him and who he is as a person. I love his quiet support and waiting on the eaves till Clara is ready.

Lies, Lies and More Lies

From Unearthly there are so many lies or untold truths as they might put it. In Hallowed we get to learn a lot of secrets, it kinda reminds me of those Russian Nesting Dolls. Clara keeps on pulling out different truths from everyone and some of those truths are very WOW.

Not My Favorite

Clara: At first she did get on my nerves a little bit, especially when she found out who in her life is going to die. I don't know how I would handle that sort of news, but I hope I would not be as selfish about it as she was behaving.

Recommendation

If you haven't read this series yet you really really need to. If you have read the series I recommend that you pre-order the book so you can have it the day it is released.

What I Liked

Paranormal

Wolves aka Guardians:These wolves are awesome! Definitely one of my favorite versions of wolf shape shifters. I like that they have easy access to both forms, human and wolf and they can pull some of their wolf traits to make them more menacing. Their clothes aren't shredded to pieces so no naked awkwardness in this book. They can also be both born and created into wolves.

Others: Witches, wraiths, succubi and incubus oh my. All the bad and scary creatures get to make an appearance too. A lot of interesting and intriguing history of the Keepers(witches) gets revealed in the book.

Characters

Calla Nightshade: I love her character, a good strong, leading alpha female. She doesn't take no shit from anyone and I like that about her. I like that she is willing to accept change, listen to reason and fight against what she believes and knows.

Romance

Two boys to choose from and she is having cravings for both of the boys in different ways. Who will she choose? Who will she end up with? Will she go back and forth in the next two books? Awe the romantic tension just adds to the book.

Team Boy

Renier VS Shay

Ren: Young alpha male wolf of Bane, cocky, self-assured, arranged marriage to Calla, he makes her blood boil, share some intense moments

Shay: Human, unknown family history, reads books, loner due to all his moving, new boy in town, unafraid of the scary wolves, saved by Calla which is punishable by death, makes her feel feelings, shares a few intense moments, he is Calla's forbidden fruit

Verdict: Well if you couldn't already tell I'm Team Shay. I just like Shay's character more . Ren is too slutty and I hate when men get away with sleeping around with many women and woman get chastised for even lusting after a man.

Didn't Like

I did get a little confused in the beginning about the history of the Guardians, Keepers and Seekers. Eventually it was explained and then it went all out the window with Calla and Shay's investigations started leading them to the real history. It wasn't that hard to comprehend once it was presented.

Recommendation

If you haven't read this series yet you should. The final book in the trilogy just came out so now you can read all the books together and no waiting for the final book.

This was the first time I have ever been to a launch party, I wasn't really expecting a true party. I was expecting to have the standard book event signing, a reading Q&A and signing line. Instead there was food, cake, Marissa chatting and greeting people, an introduction, showing the book trailer and a reading. After that the huge line started. It was wonderful to see the HUGE support group behind Marissa, there were so many family members and friends there cheering her on.

Having a huge camera made me look very official. Marissa's dad came up and introduced himself to me, I wish I could have said I was part of some reporting group, but no I'm just a little blogger and reader enthusiast. I got to talk to her publisher and the Seattle Media Rep which was really wonderful. With my camera I got to take come awesome pictures of the event. I wish I would have taken some others of her family as well.

Waiting for the presentation to start. Her Grandma and parents are right up front and center. This little room did completely fill up, the back wall had people standing as well as people waiting just outside the door.

The Presentation

There was some technical difficulty with getting the projector's sound to turn on. Originally the plan was to show the book trailer first, have Marissa talk about her book a little and than finish off with a reading. Instead she first talked. Marissa preceded to tell us that earlier in the day she went to Barnes and Noble in Seattle where she was signing stock of 12 books. The B&N staff could only find 11 and one was missing. As she was walking out of the store she saw a man reading her book. Marissa went up to him and introduced herself as the author. He told her he was enjoying the book and she ended up signing the book for him. Marissa got a little emotional telling us this story and how surreal, emotional and a strange moment that was for her when she realized that the book is not longer hers but she can share it with everyone.

A reading what done by her friend Becca who was one of the first people to read the story. Becca had given Marissa a lot of positive feed back and that is when Marissa figured that this could actually work.

After the reading was finished we than all when downstairs to wait in the signing line. I think I was in line around an hour and a half, not too bad, but not that quick either. I ate some yummy chocolate cake and had some of the appetizers that were provided.

There was also a raffle for two winners (sadly I didn't win) and everyone got a little swag gift bag

That was the event, it was a lot of fun. I hopefully will be able to attend another event of hers that follows the tradition signing event with the reading and Q&A. I love the Q&A portion of events, even though I never ask questions other people come up with good questions.

There was a little post that Marissa asked people to wear their red shoes in celebration of the release of her book. There were a lot of red shoes, including me as well. That was super cute to see so many people wearing all sorts of red shoes. The person who was doing photography for the event took pictures of everyone's red shoes, I think she will be posting those on Facebook for the wearers to tag themselves.

The goodie bag contained 2 bookmarks, a postcard, a sticker, her business card, 2 fortune cookies and a nuts and bolts bracelet that Marissa made.

The fortune cookies have fortunes that pertain to the book.

What I Liked

Sequel

I actually liked this book a little more than Across. I liked the issues, the drama and the search to find important information before it is too late. I did guess the information Amy was searching for when I was reading Across, but the information finally got presented in this book.

Character

Elder: I liked him even more in this book. I like how he is developing his leadership skills and trying his hardest to do the best he can.

Budding Romance

The romance to this story is a side note, but their interactions are so cute. I'm looking forward to see how their romance progresses in the final book.

A Trilogy

I personally love trilogies. I love knowing that the book will come to an end within a reasonable amount of time, but that I will also get more of the characters because the story will be three books long. Many people don't always like the middle book, but I did love the middle book in this series, but I am looking forward to the final.

Grrr...

Cliffhanger

Dang you dreaded cliffhangers, oh how I despise you. Yes this book what left at a big cliffhanger and I really really want the final conclusion now. I'm so sad that I have to wait around a year to get the final installment of the book.

Character

Amy: She did drive me a little nuts a few times in the book. She doesn't think through some things very rationally and remove her emotions and feeling from some situations that could really benefit from that.

Recommendation

Must read this trilogy.

Summary

The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister Primrose, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before — and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

What I Liked

Beginning a Trilogy

I know it took me a long time to finally start this series. I devoured the book in 2 days once I finally did start it. I'm just glad that I started this series after it has been completely published, now I don't have to wait a few years for the final book to be released.

Characters

Katniss: I completely love her character, strong (non whiny) female characters are hard to come by in the YA genre. Katniss is strong, she doesn't whine or complain she just deals with it all. I would hope I would handle her shitty situation just like she did if I was in her situation.

Peeta: I like his character as well. I love how sincere he is and how great of a guy he truly is.

Dystopian Genre

A genre I still haven't read many books in, but I have enjoyed them all. Sometimes I do find it hard for me to not hate the world they are suffering in. This futuristic controlling world is horrible and I shudder and hope that our future will not resemble this books future.

Harsh Reality

So I really didn't know what this series what about before I started to read it, I just know everyone was telling me I need to read it. I was surprised to find how much violence filled the pages of the book. There are a lot of cold and heartless people that Katniss runs into. I personally don't mind violence, death and gore, but be warned it is in the book.

Didn't Like

There wasn't anything that I didn't enjoy. I will say that by the end of the book I had to check to see who Katniss ends up with, Peeta or Gale. Yes I did spoil the book for myself, but I just had to know so I know who to root for when she is trying to figure out her feelings for both of these boys.

Recommendation

Yes everyone must read this series, especially before the movie comes out.

Catching Fire

Summary

Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark won the annual competition described in Hunger Games, but the aftermath leaves these victors with no sense of triumph. Instead, they have become the poster boys for a rebellion that they never planned to lead. That new, unwanted status puts them in the bull's-eye for merciless revenge by The Capitol...

What I Liked

Romantic Tension
Gale or Peeta, who is Katniss going to choose? The boy she has been friends with for a long time or the boy who has helped her survive. Even though I do know who Katniss will end up with (since I peaked at the last pages) I love both of the boys. She has two every great and wonderful boys to choose between and I'm glad I don't have to make her decision. Katniss goes back and forth trying to figure out what she is feeling, in the process ends up causing both boys pain.
Drama
A lot of drama is present in this book. People are lying to each other when they should be confiding in each other. There is so much exciting and nerves running through my system while I was reading this book. Never a dull moment.

Didn't Like

It ended with a cliffhanger, good thing I didn't have to wait for the final book to be released.

Recommendation

Yes everyone must read this series.

Mockingjay

Summary

In fact, the dangers seem to be escalating: President Snow has declared an all-out war on Katniss, her family, her friends, and all the oppressed people of District 12. The thrill-packed final installment of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy will keep young hearts pounding.

At Odds

I finished the last book at 1 am because I had to know what happens, but now that it has ended I don't really know how I feel about the series now. The ending was right for the book, in war lots of lives are lost and family members aren't saved because the author wills it to be so. But as a reader (especially of YA, fantasy, romance PR, UF and Sci-fi) I crave those total and complete HEA's (Happily Ever After). There was no HEA, there was contentment and living with the horrors of the past, which is what actually happens with survival victims.
Disappointment

Katniss: I got annoyed with how extra abrasive her character became. The distance she placed between herself and everyone else and the lack of actually true heartfelt feelings. In the end she became too cold and too strong and she lost one of the greatest attributes that as humans we can have, compassion.
Death
A lot of characters died and no one and I mean NO one was safe from the author. Yes I cried when some of those wonderful characters were lost.

Recommendation

I'm not sure now what I recommend. I really enjoyed book one and book two there was still a lot of hope, but now with book 3 I'm not so sure. I think I would rather forget book 3 and make up my own conclusion for the characters. I think it is worth the read and it is a great book to learn from.

What I Loved

The World

At first I was a little confused with the parameters of the world. Witch hunts were happening, but dragons and fae lived within the world. To me this didn't make since and than I learned that a lady of importantance was brutally tortured by witches. When more of the world was unveiled I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love reading books with dragons and the fae.

A Companion Novel

Dragonswood is the companion book to Dragon's Keep. Dragon's Keep takes place a few generations earlier and mentions are made of what Princess Rosalind accomplished. Carey did a good job making references and telling little tidbits about what happened. I didn't feel the need to set down Dragonswood and find Dragon's Keep. I would like to one day read Dragon's Keep because I did enjoy this book and I would like to hear Rosalind's story in detail.

Character

Tess: She is a very strong willed character and I really loved her character for this. Tess does have some weak moments under extremely harsh circumstances, but she does everything she can to right her wrongs and make amends. She is very leery of men and doesn't trust easily and the growth she shows throughout the book is inspiring.

A Bit More

Romance

I would have liked a few more connecting moments between the characters. Some YA goes very young in this aspect and with the couples only share a few looks and than they are madly in love. The lack of romantic wooing doesn't hurt the story because it isn't about the romance but the growth of our girl Tess and her trials to become the woman she is meant to be.

Recommendation

Well worth the read especially if you love the fantasy world with dragons and fairies.

I did some post processing for the picture. I saturated the colors because the reds and greens on the presents were way to distracting. I also added the white vignette around the corners to give it a more child like magic feel.

These are fabric books that I made for my friend's daughter. They are actually really simple to make, the story is bought by the yard and all you have to do it cut out each page and follow the directions on how how to sew together. Each book took me around an hour to finish. This is only my 3rd sewing project and I'm pretty happy how it turned out. I still have to make a few for myself as well.
