Through the Ever Night Review

Through the Ever Night

Summary
A world-defying love is put to the ultimate test in the heart-stopping sequel to Veronica Rossi's "masterpiece," Under the Never Sky. (Examiner.com)

It's been months since Aria last saw Perry. Months since Perry was named Blood Lord of the Tides, and Aria was charged with an impossible mission. Now, finally, they are about to be reunited. But their reunion is far from perfect. The Tides don't take kindly to Aria, a former Dweller. And with the worsening Aether storms threatening the tribe's precarious existence, Aria begins to fear that leaving Perry behind might be the only way to save them both.

Threatened by false friends, hidden enemies, and powerful temptations, Aria and Perry wonder, Can their love survive through the ever night?

In this second book in her spellbinding Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi combines fantasy and dystopian elements to create a captivating love story as perilous as it is unforgettable.

What I Loved
Book Two
The middle book in the trilogy can be so hard many times. We are so close yet not close enough to get the last bit of the story. Even though it was the dreaded second book it was still a fantastic read. I was kept intrigued every chapter with the switching POVs from Aria and Perry.
Characters
In the first book I really loved both characters and I still love them. They kept on proving how awesome they were at each and every turn. Some decisions they had to make where heart wrenching, but they stayed true to their character and I like that about them.
Romance
A little more romance was added to the story, but not enough to label it a romance. Again just the perfect amount of romance to keep me very happy and content.
Story
Once again Rossi has delivered an amazing story. She threw her characters into so many different situations and made them choose the logical routes and not necessarily the route they truly wanted to take. So many different intense situations that kept me turning the pages and wanting more.

Didn't Like
That the book came to an end and I have to wait another year for the final book.

Recommendation
I great second book and I can't wait to read the final installment, so sad that I have to wait over a year to get it. If you haven't read the Under the Never Sky yet, you need to get on it!

Hearts of Darkness Review

Hearts of Darkness

Summary
In the first of a dazzling new romantic trilogy, one woman’s courageous search plunges her into a millennia-old supernatural war—and an irresistible passion…

Nurse Kayla Friday has dedicated her life to science and reason. But for her, Seattle is a place of eerie loss and fragmented, frightening memories. And now the only clue to her sister’s murder reveals a secret battle between two ancient mythologies…and puts Kayla in the sights of lethally-sexy werewolf mercenary Hart. He’ll do whatever it takes to obtain the key to the Gate of the Land of the Dead and free what’s left of his soul. But seducing the determined Kayla is putting them at the mercy of powerful desires neither can control. And as the clock ticks down to hellish catastrophe, the untested bond between Kayla and Hart may lead to the ultimate sacrifice.

What I Loved
Paranormal
Lots of shape shifters and magic that the vast majority of the public doesn't know about.
Location
Love it when books are located in Seattle, my home state. Love being able to say I have been there to that location they are mentioning. Seattle is also the best location due to us being a natural hot spot for paranormal activity. (You can see a picture of mine I took when I went to Gas Works Park, mentioned in the book.)
Story
Fantastic! Perfect amount of romance with an awesome amount of paranormal creatures and happenings. The story was filled with adventure and mystery, never a dull moment in the whole book.
Characters
Kayla: She is a fun personality, I really enjoyed her character. She doesn't fall apart easy and stays relatively strong considering what she has to deal with the death of her sister.
Hart: The social reject, got to love him. He is perfect for Kayla and I adore his weakness he develops around her.

Didn't Like Figuring Out
It took me a chapter or two to figure out what type of paranormal parameters this world has. I didn't read the prequel before I read this one, I do plan on reading it one day. But as any new book goes, I figured it out soon enough.

Recommendation
Fantastic read for those who read and love paranormal romance.

Shadow Rising Review

Shadow Rising
By Kendra Leigh Castle

Summary
Ancient Secrets, Dark Passions...

As one of the Grigori, a noble vampire dynasty shrouded in mystery, Ariane has spent her life hidden away in the desert. Like all of her kind, she is a watcher, fated to observe, forbidden to act. Yet when her best friend, Sammael, vanishes, she defies all rules and flees her safe haven to bring him home.

A shape-shifting assassin for the House of Shadows, Damien Tremaine is hired to locate Sammael. His hunt for the wayward Grigori leads him to Ariane, the rogue vamp who stands between him and his bounty. Damien never lets emotion interfere with his work, but a single touch from the sexy, beguiling vampire shatters his self-control. Drawn together by their common goal, what begins as an alliance of necessity soon becomes one of desire. But when the secret at the dark heart of the Grigori comes to light, Damien and Ariane must make a choice that could bind them eternally...or tear them—and everything they care about—apart.

What I Loved
Series
Shadow Rising is book 3 in this amazing Dark Dynasties series filled with sexy cat shifting vampire men that purr with a strong female character to complement those bad boys purrfectly. Each book contains a different set of lovers with an overall story arc throughout the series and individually plots within each book. We still get to see the previous couples throughout the series, thankfully, I would miss the other characters too much if their story was done completely.
Characters
Ariane: An innocent vampire, that one doesn't happen often, and I really like her character even more for it. But she can also kick some ass when the need arises, so no weak and whiny dames in this book.
Damien: Oh I absolutely love him. Love his sarcastic attitude that can get him into some major trouble. He is that bad boy that every girl just falls for and wants to be the one to fix and love him. Here is a perfect quote that shows his sex purring mixed with his attitude. "To his shock, he had to swallow back an inadvertent purr. He didn't purr for anyone. Anyone. And certainly not for something as cheap as a little attention."
Romance
Hot and sexy as hell. What can I say I'm a sucker for each purr that these Cait Sith produce.
Story
We get to finally learn about the Grigori and all their secrets and their secrets are awesome. I loved how Kendra has yet again woven another piece of fantasy so masterfully into this fantastic world.

Didn't Like
What the hell is there not to like in these books or this series. The only thing I don't like is the book having to end and wanting the next book, the next story and the next set of lovers.

Recommendation
Everyone that reads paranormal romance has got to read this series, how can you pass up hot men that purr!

Shadow and Bone Review

Shadow and Bone

Summary
Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha…and the secrets of her heart.

What I Liked
Story
What a story, I'm so glad this is going to be a trilogy and we still have two more books of this awesome high fantasy world Leigh has created. The whole story and concept was intriguing and interesting, I was never bored and always wanting more.
Character
Alina: I really liked her character, I liked that when we meet her she wasn't the typical heroine. Alina isn't pretty, isn't popular or good at anything really, she is just plain unnoticed Alina; until she does something extraordinary to save her best friends life. Only once she learns about her hidden abilities does Alina finally get to shine and prove herself to the world and herself.
Team Boy
Not the typical team boy, but you have Alina interested in both, Mal her best childhood friend who hasn't noticed her and the new mysterious Darkling who is paying Alina lots of extra attention. The Darkling is tempting to root for, but I was always rooting for Mal to show back up into the story.

Didn't Like
. . . I have to wait for the next book and I can't have it now.

Recommendation

Monument 14 Review

Monument 14

Summary
Your mother hollers that you’re going to miss the bus. She can see it coming down the street. You don’t stop and hug her and tell her you love her. You don’t thank her for being a good, kind, patient mother. Of course not—you launch yourself down the stairs and make a run for the corner.Only, if it’s the last time you’ll ever see your mother, you sort of start to wish you’d stopped and did those things. Maybe even missed the bus.But the bus was barreling down our street, so I ran.Fourteen kids. One superstore. A million things that go wrong.

In Emmy Laybourne’s action-packed debut novel, six high school kids (some popular, some not), two eighth graders (one a tech genius), and six little kids trapped together in a chain superstore build a refuge for themselves inside. While outside, a series of escalating disasters, beginning with a monster hailstorm and ending with a chemical weapons spill, seems to be tearing the world—as they know it—apart.

What I Liked
Story
When I was reading the book I kept thinking of a modernized and more tame version of Lord of the Flies, but in a supermarket instead of on an unpopulated island. Monument 14 contains some opposite character personalities and how different people will coupe with life threatening situations. The book is filled with survival, some violence and interesting situations.
Characters
Dean: The Stable/Dependable One: I have to admit for some reason when I started reading the book I though our character was a girl, no gender specific notations were made to make me think other wise until a few chapter in when the character was referred to him being Sr and his brother Jr. After I got over that and I had switch my gender perceptions I did have a hard time loving Dean, I liked his character, but I'm not the hugest fan of nonathletic nerdy boys. I did feel sorry for him, he was the unnoticed guy that becomes the "gofer" (go for this go for that) in the book. But in situations like these a dependable and stable character is needed.
Niko: The Leader: Every bad situation needs to have "The Boy Scout" the one who knows how to take control, asses the situation and save them all. He may have been a tight ass on many things, but I personally would gravitate more towards this type of person.
Jake and Brayden: The Idiots: The ones who cause the most problems for the group and their survival. Hate these guys.
Josie: Momma Hen: The one who takes care of the little ones, I would mostly take up this position.

Didn't Like
At a few points in the book I wasn't sure if I would be able to finished the book, not because it wasn't good but because I got so into it and I was getting stressed out by some of the things that where happening to these poor kids. I don't handle thriller end of the world disaster movies and books very well, but I'm glad I worked my way through it because I did thoroughly enjoy the book.

Recommendation
A book to be read for sure. No romance in this book at all though.

Dreamless Review

Dreamless

Summary
As the only Scion that can enter Hades at will, Helen descends to the Underworld in search of a way to overcome the Furies and end the cycle of revenge that has cursed the Scions. But she’s running out of time. Each descent weakens her both in mind and spirit. A mysterious stranger might be her only salvation, but the price may be her love for Lucas Delos.

As an unforgettable love triangle emerges, Josephine Angelini’s compelling saga becomes ever more intricate and spellbinding. The eagerly awaited sequel to the internationally bestselling Starcrossed, Dreamless delivers with a huge emotional impact that will leave readers satisfied—and longing for more.

What I Loved
Book Two
The middle book is always the killer book in a trilogy, I love the middle books but at the same time they drive me crazy because I'm so close yet so far from the ending. So many answers I want now and I have to wait, but I loved this one. Dreamless kept me entranced and captivated throughout the entire book. Lots of both good and bad things happened by the end of the book.
Emotions
Wow this book is filled with so many emotions; desire for the off limits, exhaustion for a seemingly impossible task, betrayal, developing feelings for another. . . the list can go on and on. Helen was being pulled in so many directions and I could feel her pain.
Character
Helen: She was amazing in this book, I admire her for her stamina and continually dealing with her horrible trips to the Underworld. Also handling another heart breaking situation that I don't want to say what it is. Her willingness to fight and learn how to defend herself without her abilities. I really do love Helen in this book and I will be 100% rooting for her in the battles to come.
Greek Mythology
My favorite thing about this series. I love any retelling or use of Greek mythology in books and Josie does wonderfully with creating her own use of the heroic mythological characters and archetypes. I will also admit that I love Hades especially when he is used as the brooding good guy and I'm so happy with how Josie portrayed Hades in her version. Oh and we get to meet Morpheus, WOW, I would love to visit him in my dreams.

Didn't Like
Having to wait for the final book, killer!

Recommendation
You have got to read this series especially if you love the tale of Romeo and Juliet mixed with Greek mythology.

Of Poseidon Review

Of Poseidon

Summary
Galen is the prince of the Syrena, sent to land to find a girl he’s heard can communicate with fish. Emma is on vacation at the beach. When she runs into Galen—literally, ouch!—both teens sense a connection. But it will take several encounters, including a deadly one with a shark, for Galen to be convinced of Emma’s gifts. Now, if he can only convince Emma that she holds the key to his kingdom . . .

Told from both Emma and Galen’s points of view, here is a fish-out-of-water story that sparkles with intrigue, humor, and waves of romance.

What I Loved
Merfolk
I haven't read many merpeople stories, not because I don't like them, only because I haven't gotten my hot little hands on many of them. I personally am not much of a sea person, but if I grew a tail and could transform into a mermaid I would sure love the sea then. Love mermaids, especially the mermen after reading this story. Where can I find my own hot merman? I also enjoyed the merpeople history and use of both Triton and Poseidon with tie ins to Atlantis.
Characters
Galen: Oh swoon! I am completely in love with him! Love his I'm a tough bad ass merman superior to all the mere mortals. Love the attraction and how defensive he gets over Emma, so touching and cute.
Emma: She a quite an enjoyable character too. Her coming of age discoveries of herself and capabilities are fun to read. Her hot little temper adds some spice to her interactions with Galen and his sister.
Romance
Loved the romance in this book, it was perfect, cute, touching and sweet.
Rotating POV
Loved that we get to know both Galen and Emma's feelings through out the book with each chapter rotating characters. I Did think it was kinda odd that Emma's chapters were from 1st person while Galen's were told in 3rd person. I guess it was an easy way to distinguish who's chapter it was since the chapters weren't labeled as Emma or Galen.

Killing Me
Oh that ending! When I read the last sentence I was like "What?! I NEED MORE! NOW!" A tortuous cliffhanger ending, love them, but they do kill me.

Recommendation
Got to read this fantastic merpeople book.

Struck Review

Struck

Summary
Mia Price is a lightning addict. She's survived countless strikes, but her craving to connect to the energy in storms endangers her life and the lives of those around her.

Los Angeles, where lightning rarely strikes, is one of the few places Mia feels safe from her addiction. But when an earthquake devastates the city, her haven is transformed into a minefield of chaos and danger. The beaches become massive tent cities. Downtown is a crumbling wasteland, where a traveling party moves to a different empty building each night, the revelers drawn to the destruction by a force they cannot deny. Two warring cults rise to power, and both see Mia as the key to their opposing doomsday prophecies. They believe she has a connection to the freak electrical storm that caused the quake, and to the far more devastating storm that is yet to come.

Mia wants to trust the enigmatic and alluring Jeremy when he promises to protect her, but she fears he isn't who he claims to be. In the end, the passion and power that brought them together could be their downfall. When the final disaster strikes, Mia must risk unleashing the full horror of her strength to save the people she loves, or lose everything.

What I Loved
Hook
The prologue hooked me from the very beginning, after I read those two short page I was like, "WOW! I really have to do some intense reading like now!" The quote that really had me very intrigued was "My name is Mia Price, and I'm a human lightening rod. Do they make a support group for that? They should, and let me tell you why. My name is Mia Price, and I'm a lightening addict!" This prologue sets the tone for the whole book.
Characters
Mia: I really enjoyed her character, she is the ever reluctant hero of the story. She just wants to be left alone and not bothered about her weird freakish dangerous addiction. I was completely intrigued by her ability to survive  and crave so many lightening strikes. Love her ever stubborn attitude and completely loyalty and protectiveness to her family.
Jeremy: The mystery boy know one knows anything about. All the information about him doesn't get fully unveiled till the end of the story, but I had a feeling I knew where he was from by the last third of the book and oh man is it good.
Romance
As I like to put it the book has a side of romance. The main story doesn't fully focus on Mia and Jeremy's interest in each other. For me it was the perfect about, just enough for me to become invested in their happiness together.
Story
The majority of the book, besides the prologue and epilogue, took place over three days. Those three days contained a lot of information and action. Mass hysteria, starvation, end of the world predictions make for the perfect time for a religious fanatic to step in and control people with their fears. It is some crazy and intense stuff all throughout the book.

Love to Hate
I hate the evil/bad person being a religious fanatic, they scare me more then anything because there is no reasoning with them. But at the same time they make for the greatest villains in books because they are complete nut jobs and I get strong feelings against them.

Recommendation
A great read, got to go pick it up

Under the Never Sky Review

Under the Never Sky

Summary
Since she'd been on the outside, she'd survived an Aether storm, she'd had a knife held to her throat, and she'd seen men murdered. This was worse.

Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland - known as The Death Shop - are slim. If the cannibals don't get her, the violent, electrified energy storms will. She's been taught that the very air she breathes can kill her. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He's wild - a savage - and her only hope of staying alive.

A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile - everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria's help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption. Opposites in nearly every way, Aria and Perry must accept each other to survive. Their unlikely alliance forges a bond that will determine the fate of all who live under the never sky.

What I Loved
Overall Review
What an awesome book, an all around amazing storyline with fantastic characters as well. The story was fast paced and never slowed down, something was always going on and happening. I'm so glad I finally got to read it, I wish I would have read it earlier it was just that awesome. I'm looking forward to the next book, I want more!!
Characters
Aria: For starters, I love her name, I have always been a fan of A names, to me they sound really pretty. Her actual character personality I freaking loved! I was surprised by how strong she was, I was expecting her to be this whiny and weak character, but nope not a peep out of her. I love her ability to adapt and her will to survive.
Peregrine aka Perry: He is my favorite character type, the dark brooding bad boy that has many issues and just needs the right girl to love him. Loved his cool exterior, but his soft interior that he slowly revealed to Aria.
Romance
Not the typical love at first sight, thankfully, but the more realistic falling for them over time. The romance is on the side, but not the main storyline. Just the right amount of romance to add to the story, but not overwhelm it with straight romance.
Dystopian
Aria gets the best of both worlds, she got to do the whole virtual reality stuff but then she gets to know the real life outside excitements. Adding the increased senses to the human evolution is just genius and made this book even better.
A New Trilogy
Aria discovers a lot of things both good and bad about the pods and herself and I'm looking forward to seeing what grand adventures and issues Aria and Perry are going to come across in the next book.

Didn't Like
Nothing, besides that the book had to come to an end and I can't have the next one in my hands now

Recommendation
Got to read this book NOW!

The Last Echo Review

The Last Echo

Summary
In the end, all that's left is an echo...
Violet kept her morbid ability to sense dead bodies a secret from everyone except her family and her childhood-best-friend-turned-boyfriend, Jay Heaton. That is until forensic psychologist Sara Priest discovered Violet's talent and invited her to use her gift to track down murderers. Now, as she works with an eclectic group of individuals—including mysterious and dangerously attractive Rafe—it's Violet's job to help those who have been murdered by bringing their killers to justice. When Violet discovers the body of a college girl killed by "the girlfriend collector" she is determined to solve the case. But now the serial killer is on the lookout for a new "relationship" and Violet may have caught his eye...

What I Loved
Intense
Kim has done it again, she has made my heart pound and sit on the edge of my chair wondering how the heck Violet is going to make it out of this situation this time.
Characters
Violet: I still enjoyed her character. Her faithfulness to Jay is wonderful, but her confusion about Rafe makes her a normal teenage girl and adds entertainment. I have to say, it would suck to be her, she always draws the murders attention and that is not a good thing.
Rafe: If I didn't love and miss Jay so much in this book I would love Rafe even more. I'm conflicted with Rafe, I really do love the dark brooding boys and he fits this so well and this connection that him and Violet has is both intriguing and concerning. I don't know what to fully make of him, but I really do like him and I want to know more about him.
Murder's POV
This always freaking creeps me out to no end, but I do think it is a good thing and it brings me back down to Earth and reminds me to not judge people by their looks. The good looking ones can be even more dangerous because you can let your guard down around them since they don't "look" the part of psycho.

Didn't Like
I'm a such a wuss and this book scares me! Really make you think about knowing a person before you trust them, looks can be deceiving. I'm still waiting for Violet to finally learn self defense, just reading the books makes me want to learn.

The Immortal Rules Review

The Immortal Rules

Summary
In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

What I Liked
Future of Vampires
Vampires are the dominate species in the world and many humans have been killed off by disease. This book stays with the traditional vampire and adds I guess you could call them zombie vampires aka "rabids", now those things are scary, even the animals aren't safe from this.
Action
Allie learns how to fight with a katana, how cool is that! There is a decent amount of fighting and action throughout the entire book. It isn't filled with action, but a good amount.
Character
Allison aka Allie: She is awesome! She is almost as bad ass as Rose, but not quite. I enjoyed her internal struggle that she has with herself, she doesn't ever want to fully give into the monster she has become. Allie wants to keep her humanity, even though it is a continuous struggle and not going to be easy ever. I like her perseverance, strength, will and stubbornness.
Romance
This book has very little romance, for me I enjoy having a break from lots of romance especially in the YA genre.

Didn't Like
It slowed down a little in the middle of the book while she was traveling looking for Eden, but that didn't last very long and it soon picked up.
