Bookography (17)

Bookography

s a fun new way to share the beauty of books with photography. Take a picture with the book being the focus or inspiration and share the picture(s) you have created for the week.

Book
The Complete Works of The Brothers Grimm
Self Portrait

This is actually an assignment that I had to do for class, we had to take a self portrait. This was actually really hard to do, to get the focus on me, set the timer and have me look semi decent within the photo. It was completely a blind shot when I was attempting to take this photo.

That is my reading chair and it is very comfortable. The other books in the coffee table are 5 Charles Dickens Christmas Stories and a Greek Mythology Book.

What do you think of my reading self portrait? Any suggestions to make the photo more visually appealing?
I ended up taking a few others using the mirror and showing my camera that I kinda like better.

If you would like to participate please do. I will try to post my Bookography post each week on Wednesdays. I would love if you would link back to my blog and share your own link in the comments.

Claudia Gray
Alyson Noel
Veronica Roth
Amy Plum
Melissa Marr
Kiersten White
Josephine Angelini
Guest of Honor: Kendra Leigh Castle

I choose my guests by authors who I have actually meet (except Angelini and Castle) at book signs before. All of these authors were really fun at their events and so entertaining, they just seemed like the logical choice to have at my imaginary Thanksgiving dinner party. The two I haven't actually meet, I really want to meet. I put a guest of honor, because I couldn't erase another name and I love Castle's books so much.

What books are on your winter TBR list?

Fate's Edge Review

Fate's Edge

Summary
Audrey Callahan left behind her life in the Edge, and she's determined to stay on the straight and narrow. But when her brother gets into hot water, the former thief takes on one last heist and finds herself matching wits with a jack of all trades...

Kaldar Mar-a gambler, lawyer, thief, and spy-expects his latest assignment tracking down a stolen item to be a piece of cake, until Audrey shows up. But when the item falls into the hands of a lethal criminal, Kaldar realizes that in order to finish the job, he's going to need Audrey's help.

What I Loved
Series
This is the 3rd book in The Edge series and I really love this series. Each book's POV is through a new set of couples, but you still get to hear about the previous couples through the book. You don't have to say good bye completely to the last characters and you get to meet another couple. Each book has it's own story but there is an overall storyline that arcs through the entire series connecting them all together. The book is filled with action and keeps a very fast pace filled with excitement.
Characters
I have loved all of the male and female character Ilona Andrews have created, they create awesome characters. None of their character have ever annoyed me and make me want to strangle them.
Audrey: She is a completely new character to the series, a strong woman that we have not met before. Audrey has had a hard life growing up with an terrible family that isn't supportive nor helpful. Audrey won't let herself be wooed by the charming Kaldar, but she likes to push back and makes him work hard to figure her out.
Kaldar: We got to meet him a little in book 2, but this becomes his book and it is his turn to be unraveled. Kaldar is cocky, self assured, sexy conman that can charm the pants off of any woman, except Audrey and that frustrates him to know end.
Dynamic
I love how these two interact with each other, it is this push pull sparing session with each other. They match verbal blows and they also will show off their own set of magical skills. The romance tension is there between the two characters, but the bedroom scenes are left off of the page, for the most part.

A Little Fast
The pace did seem a little rushed. The characters only had a certain amount of time to accomplish their mission, but I still felt like everything was being too rushed and a little forced at times. Even at the end I could have used a few more pages of conclusion with these characters.

Recommendation
If you like to read adult urban fantasy with a little bit of romance, you have got to read this series.

 2 Awesome Books
IMM #36

IMM is a meme hosted by the Story Siren, anyone can participate telling about what they bought, borrowed or received for the week.

Received
I traded with Mindy at Magical Urban Fantasy Reads, we traded A Millions Sun with Wildefire and she also included Fates Edge. I was saying how awesome Ilona Andrews books are, but Mindy doesn't read many adult books so she passed the book along to me. She also included a little tab with her header and a business card as well.
If you haven't checked out Mindy's blog you really should, she is an awesome blogger.
Thank you Mindy so very much, I can't wait to start Beth's books.

Bookography

I participated in this meme for the 1st time.

I also have an ARC Giveaway going on till Wednesday for Dragonswood and A Probability of Miracles, US only. Check it out

Sorry I have been a little quiet this week. I was catching up on my ARCs, practicing taking photos and dealing with some really bad headache issues. That is why I didn't take a picture of the books Mindy got me, I'm trying to be on the computer as little as possible.

Reading List
1) Fates Edge (currently reading)
2) Across the Universe
3) A Million Suns

ARC Giveaway (1)

*CLOSED*
ARC Giveaway

I have 2 ARCs that I would like to pass on to readers. I hope that you will read and review the ARC and post it on any reviewer site and/or your blog (if you have one), but I am not making this a requirement.

Dragonswood by Janet Lee Carey
Summary
Wilde Island is in an uproar after the recent death of its king. The uneasy pact between dragons, fairies, and humans is fraying, and a bloodthirsty witch hunter with a hidden agenda whips villages into frenzies with wild accusations. Tess, a blacksmith’s daughter from a tiny hamlet near the mysterious Dragonswood, finds herself caught in the crosshairs of fate when she is accused of witchery and has to flee for her life along with her two best friends.

Not even Tess’s power to see the future can help the girls as they set off on their desperate journey, but she keeps having visions of a man wielding a sword. And when she finally meets him, Tess has no idea how to handle the magnetic attraction she feels for him, or the elusive call she hears from the heart of the Dragonswood.

In this epic romance, an ancient prophecy comes true in a way neither dragon, fairy, nor human would have predicted.

 My Two Cents
Dragonswood is a companion novel to Dragons Keep, I have not read DK, but I would like to.
I have read and reviewed this book, but I haven't posted my review and I won't until the date gets closer.
I did give the book 4 stars on Goodreads.com.
Genre: YA Fantasy
Releases January 5th 2012
Summary
Dry, sarcastic, sixteen-year-old Cam Cooper has spent the last seven years in and out hospitals. The last thing she wants to do in the short life she has left is move 1,500 miles away to Promise, Maine - a place known for the miraculous events that occur there. But it's undeniable that strange things happen in Promise: everlasting sunsets; purple dandelions; flamingoes in the frigid Atlantic; an elusive boy named Asher; and finally, a mysterious envelope containing a list of things for Cam to do before she dies. As Cam checks each item off the list, she finally learns to believe - in love, in herself, and even in miracles.

A debut novel from an immensely talented new writer, The Probability of Miracles crackles with wit, romance and humor and will leave readers laughing and crying with each turn of the page.

 My Two Cents
This is Wendy's debut stand alone novel.
I have read and reviewed this book, but I won't be publishing my review until closer to the release date.
I did give it 4 stars on Goodreads.com
Genre: YA realistic/contemporary fiction

Book
Illusions by Aprilynn Pike

Illusions

This is my 1st book picture using my new camera and it took me almost an 1 1/2 hour to get the right picture, lighting, exposure ans so forth. I did also shoot this photo is RAW, but I only used the small file because I don't have a bigger card yet to hold the larger file sizes. I did very little post editing, I changed the exposure and a few other minor things.

What do you think? How was my 1st attempt using my new camera?

Also you should check out my Flickr page, I have added some new photos that I took with my new camera.

If you would like to participate please do. I will try to post my Bookography post each week on Wednesdays. I would love if you would link back to my blog and share your own link in the comments.

Top 10 Tuesdays (1)

Top 10 Tuesday
Topic: Books that have been on my shelves for the longest that I still haven't read

This meme is created by The Broke and the Bookish, anyone can participle telling about their top 10 topic items are.

1) Gregory Maguire
Wicked February 2002
I had picked up the book and read a few chapters of it, but I just wasn't really feeling it at the time time because I was in the romance genre stage at that point.

2) JRR Tolkien
The Return of the King Christmas 2002
I was comparing the movie with the book way too much, I got about half way through The Two Towers before I put it down. I still would like to reread the whole series one day.

3) Jane Lindskold
Dragon of Despair 2003
Wolf Captured 2004
Wolf Hunting 2006
I read the 1st 2 books in the series. My reading choices when from sci-fi fantasy to YA at this point and I just lost interest in reading this series.

4) Nora Roberts
Falling for Rachel/Convincing Alex 2008
My grandma gave me this book along with the Morrigan's Cross series, she doesn't care too much for fantasy books and I guess this one had a little too much for her. I did read the Morrigan's Cross series and to this day that those are the only Roberts books I have read.

5) Charlene Harris
Dead Until Dark 2008
I got this book from Borders free books when I worked there. My coworkers were talking about Sookie and kept on mentioning her name. Still haven't read the series or seen an episode.

 6) Gayle Foreman
If I Stay ARC 2008
I got from Borders, but I never read it.

7) Richelle Mead
Succubus Blues Memorial Day 2009
Succubus on Top Memorial Day 2009
After I read the VA books I could tell she also wrote in the adult genre. I have been wanting to read her other stuff for a while now, but I'm waiting for the series to be completely released and than I will read them.

8) Gena Showalter
Savor Me Slowly Summer 2009
Darkest Whisper Summer 2009
I love love love her Atlantis series and Tales of an Extraordinary Girl. My friend raves about the Men series and I know I will love it as well, the only thing holding me back is this series is huge and it is still being published. I want to get everything published by Showalter.

9) Cherry Adair
Edge of Danger December 2009
Night Secret December 2009
Night Fall December 2009
We get Cherry's books all the time at work, she will bring in all her new releases to us girls to read. She brought in a box for Christmas and these are the ones I grabbed, I still haven't figured out exactly how the series goes.

10) Karen Chance
Death's Mistress January 2010
I love this spin of series and I love the character, another series I have decided to put on hold till more books come out.

These are the books that have been on my shelves for the longest period of time.

No Books Week
IMM #35

IMM is a meme hosted by The Story Siren, anyone can participate telling about what they bought, borrowed or received.

I was a good girl this week an I didn't buy any book and sadly I didn't get books in the mail. However I did get some swag.

3 Bookmarks <signed>, 3 postcards <signed> and 2 magnets
I'm on the street team for Touch, so I got a set for me, a set to giveaway and set to go in my awesome swag pack I have been accumulating. I will hopefully have this giveaway up soon. If you haven't read Touch or if you don't own it you should get it. Touch is AMAZING, I loved it and it is one of my favorite reads this year, My Review. The paperback release is still on sale for $10.68 and the kindle is $5.99 on Amazon.

Gift
My husband gave me my Christmas gift early. I got my Canon 60D and I can't wait to learn how to use it. The pictures above are not with the new camera, I'm still figuring out how to use it. I think I want to name my camera, a female name. Any suggestions?

My Reviews
I didn't publish any reviews this week. I have been reading some of my ARCs lately and I won't be publishing those reviews till around the release date. I also finished my sewing project for my friends baby, not much time to read this week.

Book
Cold Kiss by Amy Garvey
Cold Kiss

I didn't do too much to this photo. I brightened it a little bit, cropped and straightened the photo.

A New Camera
I just got a new camera on Tuesday, a Canon 60D with a kit lens 18-135mm starter lens (I will replace this lens with I have the money). The picture was not shot with the new camera, I took that picture a few mornings ago when everything was frosty out and the sun was rising. I have only taken a few tester shots to figure out how to control the aperture, exposure, ISO and so forth. Keep an eye out on my flickr site, I will try and add more photos taken by my new camera there.

If you would like to participate please do. I will try to post my Bookography post each week on Wednesdays. I would love if you would link back to my blog and share your own link in the comments.

Random: Waiting in Lines

Have you ever stood in line for hours to get a book at midnight?

I was wondering about how many people do wait in lines for releases. My husband is waiting in line for some video game, I have no idea what the title is nor do I really care. But this got me thinking and reminiscing about midnight release parties for books.

I worked at Borders for 4 year (may they rest in peace) and in my time there Borders hosted a few midnight release parties. Breaking Dawn which I vaguely remember and I didn't understand what all the hoopla was all about. A few other unnoticeable by me release parties that I don't even remember what the book was. Than the greatest event Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows.

I thankfully didn't work the evening shift, I worked the bright and early cafe shift starting at 6am. When we pulled up to the store we already had our first person waiting in line. I still had an hour till to open and prepare the cafe with a barrier blocking off the rest of the bookstore till 9am.

As the rest of the day progressed, more and more HP fans streamed in to wait in line. There was strips of yellow tape creating how the line would progress through the store. From the registers it went past the sci-fi section, past the fiction wall, next to the YA, bending around the staircase, snaking through the media section, past the opposite side of the stair case, past the cafe, out the Borders entrance doors, going past Joann's and around the corner.

All throughout the day people dressed as Harry or some other wizard would come to the cafe and order food and beverages while waiting in line. I was able to leave the madness that was just beginning at 3pm, but I got to hear about all the craziness that went on in the cafe and the rest of the bookstore.

On the bookstore side activities were planned for the line waiters, the only one I remember was the great debate "Is Snape good or bad?" On the cafe side the drains were flooding and the girls were running around like crazy just to keep up with the orders and the messes.

At 11:59pm one of the book sellers stood on the counters and held up HP7 above her head for all to see. The crowd hooted and hollered and the real insanity began of paying for their books and getting home to read it.

At times I wish I could have been there at the event to laugh at everything that happened and get some great tips, but at the same time I'm glad I didn't have to work till 3am.

Have you been to any midnight release book events?
Was it worth the wait?
Would you do it again?

As much as I love books I don't think I would ever go to a midnight book release. I'll save my patiently waiting for seeing the authors.

1) Dragonswood (write my review)
2) The Probability of Miracles

These next coming weeks might be really slow for me on the reading end and only reading 1 book a week. I might be taking on a writing project for my work and rewriting ALL the websites information. We are still discussing and negotiating things and hopefully I will know by mid week if I am going to be doing that. On another note my work decided to make a commercial and I got to play the happy customer. When that gets finished I hope I will have a link and I can share it with everyone.

Extraordinary Review

Extraordinary
Summary
Phoebe finds herself drawn to Mallory, the strange and secretive new girl at school. Soon the two become as close as sisters . . . until Mallory’s magnetic older brother, Ryland, appears. Ryland has an immediate, exciting hold on Phoebe — but a dangerous hold, for she begins to question her feelings about her best friend and, worse, about herself.
Soon she’ll discover the shocking, fantastical truth about Ryland and Mallory, and about an age-old debt they expect Phoebe to pay. Will she be strong enough to resist? Will she be special enough to save herself?
Intensely page-turning, this follow-up to Nancy Werlin’s acclaimed novel Impossible links the real and the otherworldly in a story that is suspenseful, conversation-starting, and utterly alluring.

Issues
I honestly had issues making it through this book. The over all story concept was interesting, but the main character Phoebe really drove me nuts.
Characters
Phoebe Rothschild: She is my least favorite type of character. Phoebe does have a kind and loving soul, but that the only thing that doesn't annoy me with her character. Otherwise she is weak, whiny and easily manipulated. She doesn't pull herself out of a very bad situation and she just keeps falling down and down until she hits bottom. Near the end she finally gains some will power and strength, but not enough for her to find redemption in my eyes.
Mallory: I do like her character much more than Phoebe. She is stronger, willing to put up a fight and keeps trying to find ways around things that she doesn't want to do.
Ryland: Ugh, I wanted to punch him and kick him where it counts. I'll just leave it at that.
Family Name
I personally can't relate to having a long family history with important people. To keep seeing Rothschild, Rothschild, Rothschild and how extraordinary Major is and all the descends are of this line (except her) drove me nuts. It annoys me when people believe since I am "this" therefor I believe in "this". No! Develop your own personal opinions and beliefs and become your own person for yourself not for others.

However
I do feel this book has a very important lesson and would be perfect for your girls and their mothers to read together. Young teen within the important development period of their life could learn a great deal. Young girls could learn how wrong it is to let others manipulate, control and mold them to be something they are not. Parents could teach their daughters how to stand up for themselves, how to even get out of bad situations and reassure them support is always there. I really do think this book could be used as a great learning tool.

Recommendation
I would suggest borrowing from the library if you are curious, but unsure of the book, especially if you have a lot of issues with weak characters. I would definitely say try the book for yourself, just because I didn't like it does mean you wouldn't enjoy it.

Information
She has a bunch of other books that she has written and they are all independent novels.
Impossible (I own)
Black Mirror (I own)
Rules of Survival
Double Helix
Locked Inside
The Killers Cousin
Are You Alone on Purpose?

Do you finish books that you don't really care for, but are curious to find out how it ends?

Bookography (14)

Bookography

s a fun new way to share the beauty of books with photography. Take a picture with the book being the focus or inspiration and share the picture(s) you have created for the week.

Book
Poems of Early Childhood (Picture)
Walt Disney's Treasure of Childhood Classics (Golden Castle)
The Wizard of Oz (1963 Edition)
Brothers Grimm Complete Fairy Tales (Corner Book)

Childhood

When I was trying to decided what I wanted to take a picture of this week, I knew I wanted to look at my nursery rhyme book and see which little rhyme I wanted to use. When I saw this picture I just thought it was perfect for my idea of setting up stacks of children books in disarray. When I was editing the picture I wanted reminiscing and whimsical emotions when looking at the picture.. I toned down the colors a little and added the white vignette.

Camera Update
I finally have decided which camera I want to get and I decided I will just use a kit lens to start with. I am going to get a Canon 60D DSLR with EF-S 18-135mm lens. I am going to get it from the website I linked because shipping if free and there is no tax as well. I'm hoping I will be getting the camera within a few weeks, so I can go through part of this class with my new camera. Otherwise I am going to have to remember my lessons as much as possible and relearn with the new camera.

If you would like to participate please do. I will try to post my Bookography post each week on Wednesdays. I would love if you would link back to my blog and share your own link in the comments.

Showing Gratitude for a Book

Giving Thanks to Books

Beth Revis asked the question: What book are YOU most grateful for?

My friend and I were just talking about this the other day, she knows I read a lot and love everything about books, but she was wondering what the 1st book that really got me reading.

There were a few middle grade books that I loved like the Santa Paws, a unicorn book and parallel universes, but I can't remember the name it is in a box in the garage though, and The Egyptian Game are my most memorable youth books. But these books didn't completely start my drive and passion for books like it is today.

My 1st books was in 7th grade and my cousin told me I needed to read some Danielle Steel books, my grandma would pass them to my cousin and my cousin would pass them along to me. I started reading Star and that was the beginning of the love. I was so proud of myself when I read Star, it only took me 3 days to read and I stayed up until 3am to finish it. Being a much bigger book than I was use to that was a major accomplishment. I have probably read some where around 30 of her books, I stopped reading them by 10th grade and I haven't picked up one of her books since. They all started to meld together and now I can't even remember which titles I have read, some of them are much more memorable than other. I wouldn't mind rereading a few of my top favorites.

After Steel I moved onto The Clan of the Cave Bear series, some high fantasy world book and than I eventually was lead to YA by a friend and paranormal romance when I needed some more mature characters.

An embarrassing story with Danielle Steel books
In school you had to read so many pages per semester and sometimes the teacher would check to make sure you had read the book and aren't lying about your reading pages.

Well I was reading one of Steel's books in 9th grade and I was going to be quizzed on book. I realized that this huge sex scene that was 10 pages long had just happened. I was hoping and crossing my fingers that my teacher (mind you he is this creepy man that hits on younger girls, I think he was even fired because of it) wouldn't flip to that page. What happens he opens to that page and skims around and says "So the characters are very intimate" Oh my goodness I was mortified talking about this subject with this really creepy teacher. I think I just replied yeah and forced the questions to be lead else where.

This might have possibly been an influence to move way from strictly romance books.

If you would also like to participate and give thanks to the book that started it all. Check out Beth Revis's blog and you can learn the details about how to participate and what you could win.

What book started it all for you?
